Textile print patterns for Tommy Hilfiger
A 10-day Craft Cluster Initiative Program which aims to provide the students with continuous exposure to the handloom and handicraft clusters, thus providing an opportunity for creative innovation and experimentation. This research was aimed to reach out to the artisans and craftsmen at the grass root level and to witness the realities of the craft sector and get insight into regional sensibilities, diversities, resources and environment.

GRADUATION PROJECT

2D
S/S 23 ATHLEISURE
DESIGN COLLECTION
The project takes inspiration from the pop-up coffee shop called “2D Cafe” which is located in Shin Okubo district, Tokyo. It is a cafe where the interior is designed like a 2D media world with black and white lines and strokes that resemble drawing lines of all 3d elements. The concept of the 2D café comes from a desire to create a unique space where you can escape from reality. The same concept is to be incorporated into the selected sportswear brand 'FILA' with the use of black and white colours and materials to produce the signature 2D effect.

FILA was founded in 1911 in the small village of Biella, Italy. Although today the brand is mostly known for sneakers and sportswear, it started as a textile manufacturer for local trade. After a few years, the brand started to focus on the international market and in 1973 FILA started to produce sportswear.
The clothing became particularly popular with tennis players and thus had its peak in the 1980s and 1990s. The sportswear brand received a boost when the tennis player Björn Borg started wearing clothes with the recognisable 'F' logo and winning several matches.

INSPIRATION

2D Cafe is a cafe located in Tokyo, where the interior is designed like a 2 dimensional world. Unlike the currently trending colourful and bright cafes, the interior of 2D cafe is pure white, with black lines that resemble drawing lines of a sketch hand drawing. The shop’s interior is decorated entirely in black and white, with the edges of the 3D furniture painted black to look like a flat image. You step in and feel like you’re stepping into a cartoon! There are crooked seats that break the rules of perspective, the column that appears to be made of paper, and inlays illustrated on arches that are indistinguishable from reality.
MOOD BOARD AND MINDMAPPING

COLOUR STORY : Wear the trend: Monochrome
This summer, designers are championing all things monochrome. The stark black-and-white can be seen in variations all over global catwalks, making the season's standard shades of yellow and coral seem almost cliché. Bold black and white colour application also highlights the growing trend for monochrome basics. This allows designers to invest in graphic black and white designs as this will answer the demand for timeless looks that remain stylish
DESIGN RESEARCH AND LOOK BOARD

2D technique has been used by many designers for Haute Couture. Jeremy Scott from MOSCHINO continues to remind us of fashion’s creative capabilities . His latest masterpiece for Moschino for season 18 collection displays An artistic outburst with a scatter of sketches emblazoned across suits, skirts, dresses and accessories. The concept is not new, as this exists, dating back to UK where knitwear designer John Carr Doughty made a brief sensation in 1966 with his knitted men's sweaters and women's sweater dresses. Fashion houses have since then have taken notes into developing them as fashion statement in their own creative ways.
The looks for the collection have been taken from various pictures of hollywood and bollywood celebrities' appearances in public - from gym looks to airport looks. Youth today are more inclined towards social media and knows how to follow and take tips from their stylists. Young celebrities and social media fashion influencers are the trendsetters. Some of the trendsetting looks includes bootcut pants with slit, high neck outerwear, oversized breathable outfits, outfits with many number of layers, corset upperwear etc.
Growth of “Athleisure”
Athleisure grew out of the dynamic use of the yoga pant. Although yoga pants were designed for the gym, their comfort and simple look led women to start wearing them in casual and formal settings. Initially popularized by women, athleisure has branched into men's clothing as well. Additions to the athleisure line up include leggings, tights, sweatpants, sneakers, hoodies, and jackets. Improved textiles have allowed sportswear to become more versatile, comfortable, and fashionable.
Other early adopters of athleisure include Nike and American Apparel. Athleisure as a market continues to grow, replacing traditional activewear and even cutting into jeans sales. Companies such as Levi Strauss & Co. and Kate Spade & Company are rushing to release products to fit the market.
As the industry recovers from worldwide pandemic, People prefer to be in their comfiest wherever they are. Customers are interested in trimming down their wardrobes and buying key pieces of apparel that can be worn in different contexts. The athletic apparel industry is offering more options that will allow wearers to easily transition between leisure and exercise.

PRINT AND DETAILING

RENDERED FLAT SKETCHES - WOMEN

FASHION STATEMENT : 2D designs dominated by a simple scheme in black and white features can flatten any volume, with decorative elements drawn/sewn onto the garments, creating a strange optical illusion that changes depending on angle and light. Flat, however, doesn’t mean monotonous: this unique two-dimensionality is almost a resource — the key to evoke a parallel world purposely simplified. Here, forms disappear and colours are muted in favour of an alternative narration — one where clients can wear drawn decorations. It makes the real, three-dimensional world look like a flat illustration, where details seems like they are enveloped in a picture.

Athleisure in another dimension: A new design concept: 3D to 2D pattern design for garments
The Spring summer 2022/23 athleisure collection is designed using contoured lines to create 2D cartoon optical illusion.
Just when we thought 2D graphics no longer have a place in this modern age, we use this concept to create this interesting collection. This has been designed to give customers the impression that they’re a cartoon. The edges accented with black contour lines creates the flattened look of a drawing.
Highlights
• Creating design directly on 3D garments and obtaining 2D pattern pieces with matched prints for garment production.
•. Creating fashion products with figure-flattening print/piping for individual customers.
•. Unbroken continuity of design eliminates tedious pattern placement.
•. Low-distortion surface parameterisation occurs between 3D garment and 2D patterns.
We propose a novel design in a 2D concept on 3D garments. By taking advantage of the cutting-edge developments in surface parameterisation, cloth simulation and texture assignment, we develop a concept that will be put to create figure-flattering prints directly onto 3D garments, and will output 2D pattern pieces with matched texture that are ready for digital printing and garment production . The process involves apparel makers putting tedious work of matching texture along seams, but also provides users with a new tool to create one-of-a-kind fashion products by designing personalised prints.
